Cub Scout Cake Bake 2012

This year Gavin wanted to make a camping cake for the Cub Scout Cake Bake. We looked at some cakes online and came up with a plan and a list of ingredients. I gave Gavin a $10 budget and we were able to make this fun cake for only $6.

Gavin and I made a homemade yellow cake with butter frosting. Half of the frosting was chocolate and we dyed the other half blue for the river and green for the trees.

We frosted ice cream cones and rolled them in coconut flakes that were dyed green.

Goldfish crackers were placed in the river and the tent was made from pretzel sticks and graham crackers. We also made a bridge with the pretzel sticks.

The camp fire was made with Fruit By The Foot and pretzel sticks. We were going to throw some Tootsie Rolls on for bigger logs but Gavin decided he wanted some logs for seats around the camp fire instead.

More green coconut was put along the sides for grass. Celine also suggested we make a flag.

We wanted this to be a two layer cake but the first cake broke as it came out of the pan. We ended up using a piece of the broken cake to make part of the camp site elevated with the river flowing down it. It turned out great!

Easy and Fun Sewing Craft

Celine wanted to give a birthday gift to a friend so I suggest she make a heating pad. I got the inspiration from my loving husband who made one in a pinch when I had a fever a couple of months ago. He simply took one of our pillow cases, put a few cups of rice in it, knotted the end, and microwaved it for a couple of minutes. What a smarty!

Since Celine and I sewed several pillow cases for Christmas gifts we thought sewing smaller sized ones would take no time at all. We searched online to see if there were any tips or tricks we could benefit from while making the heating pads. We came across this web page which gave us the idea to add oatmeal with the rice, as well as some spices of cinnamon and cloves for a nice aroma. How fantastic that we had everything at home and didn't have to buy a single thing!

We ended up making four heating pads, three in one size and one very large one (this was our first pad and we decided it was too large so we made the other ones smaller). They came out so very nice and made great gifts!

Celine and I are now thinking about making little bean bags for Luke's birthday, along with a cut out for him to throw them through.

Mike and Luke even helped out, mixing the ingredients and filling the bags.

The two coordinating fabrics came out nicely.

We made tags to go along with them, including the ingredients and instructions for heating.

These can also be thrown in the freezer to make a cold pad!

Seattle Aquarium

A friend had given me some passes to the Seattle Aquarium so I took the kids over last Monday afternoon. We met up with Daddy just as he was getting off of work. The kids had a fantastic time, enjoying the otters and octopuses the most. And I even touched a sea star and sea anemone for the first time ever!

6 months old!

Our little Colette sure is growing fast. She has been sitting up on her own without any support for the last month or so, but she doesn't roll over! Go figure!

I wasn't planning on starting this early, but I've introduced her to a few foods over the past couple of weeks. So far Colette has tasted applesauce, mashed bananas, and she's sucked on carrot sticks and pear slices. I've been feeling a little nub on her bottom gums that makes me think her first tooth will break through any day now (the sleepless nights are a big indicator too!).

She is also starting to babble more often and I have a feeling she will say "Da Da" before she says "Ma Ma" only because she uses her tongue a lot when she babbles and blows raspberries.

After having five children, the elastic waist band is the way to go for me. And not just for me. I bought a pair for Celine too. I have to say these are the only pants that fit around her WAIST, where pants should be!

Snow Days

The snow has arrived! We got around 5-6 inches yesterday and today it snowed lightly all day.

We've had hardly any schooling this week due to MLK Day (the big kids went on the annual sledding trip with the scouts up at Hurricane Ridge), the March for Life (Gavin attended with Grandma and Grandpa), and of course the snow! Some of the kids are also battling the stomach flu this week. Mike has been able to spend the last two days with us, enjoying all the fun.

I'm expecting to lose power some time this evening or tomorrow when everything is suppose to freeze over, making icy conditions for trees to snap. Mike headed out today, braving the roads so that we can have some food and supplies in the house. We have a fire going, freshly baked bread, soup in the fridge, and a kettle ready in case we lose power.

The boys, Colette, and I took a walk up the hill to watch the big kids go sledding. Check out Colette's cheeks spilling out of her hat!

My sister, Mary, had her baby girl last Monday, two weeks past her due date. We took a little trip to visit the newest addition, Chloe Ann Gerdes. She is such a doll, and so little! She looks a lot like her older brother, Brayden, but with darker hair. We're very excited to have another girl cousin in the family!

Gaby Is No Longer A Baby

Gabriel turned three last Sunday. We had a Cars themed birthday party for the little guy. He loves to play with cars and read books. Right now his favorites are Curious George, Fergus, and a turn and learn book that makes fun with letters and numbers. He has been my earliest child to want to color and draw and he enjoys getting messy with play dough and paint. He admires his older brothers as he watches them put together Lego creations and is still very much a daddy's boy. Potty training is also now in the works. We can't wait to see what this year will bring for our little man who is turning out to be not so little anymore!

Gloria in excelsis Deo!

We are celebrating the Christmas season in the Cichy house by relaxing and taking the rest of this week off from school. Here is a little peek into our Advent and Christmas of 2011.

Advent

Advent was quiet and peaceful, and I feel like I have "waited", "hoped", and have "grown" in many ways.

We celebrated the feast of Saint Nicholas on Dec. 6th.

The kids enjoyed treats they found in their stockings.

We also celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe by watching this DVD and reading about Juan Diego in the Evangelization of the New World.

Continuing the crafty mode, Celine made a blanket for her godmother's birthday.
We also made pillow cases for all of our nieces, nephews, and godchildren.

Gavin and my sister, Cathy, participated in our church's play, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever." You can watch the play on youtube. Gavin is featured in Part 2. Around the 1:44 mark he pops up on stage in the right corner.

Christmas Eve

Mike and I attended Christmas Eve Mass with Colette and left the two younger boys at Grandma's. Afterward we visited and had dinner with my family. We also got the exciting news that my brother, Anthony, is now engaged! He and his fiance, Grace, are hoping to be married sometime next year.

Christmas Day

We spent the day with Mike's family in Issaquah then came home for our own little Christmas dinner. It was great to spend time with Mike's brother, Zac, and his two boys who just moved back from Louisiana.

Advent: Wait, Hope, Grow

In order to take the time to better prepare myself and my family for the Christmas season I will be taking a break from blogging (reading and posting). I know this may sound a little strange, especially since I've gotten a lot of my ideas for schooling and homemaking from other blogs. But I feel now is a good time to just settle in, hibernate for a season, and quietly take in all the wonderful things that Advent and Christmas bring.

Like in years past we will be doing our Jesse Tree, Advent Adventure, celebrating the feast of St. Nicholas, and maybe a few new things.

Hapkido

Gavin had his first Hapkido test last week. He did an excellent job and advanced to yellow belt! We are so proud of Gavin and thankful to his godfather, Frank, for instructing and preparing him. His godmother, Gina, was also kind enough to prepare a pizza party afterward for all the participants.

I don't watch Gavin practice because I usually have a van full of kids and just drop him off. So he really surprised and impressed me with his form. He stands up straight, sits at attention, kicks with accuracy and power, and shouts "Oye!" with intimidation.

One of the best things about his first test and advancement is that he achieved it with his best friend, Xavier. They're like two peas in a pod!

Mary's Baby Shower

My mom, sister, and I attended my sister's baby shower a few weeks ago in Sequim. Mary is due to have a girl in late December. Can't wait for Colette to have a little girl cousin to play with!

This tiered diaper "cake" is filled with all kinds of goodies for the baby. Mary makes these often for friends and family. It's a nice center piece for parties and a wonderful gift. She really has a great talent for it and makes some incredible pieces. It was nice to see that someone put one together for her.

Cousin Reunion

Back in August my dad got a visit from his cousin, Dick, and his wife. They live down in Florida and were taking an Alaskan cruise via Seattle. It was neat for me to meet my second cousin (and for the kids to meet their third cousin!).

Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures with Cousin Dick. Before he came to visit I asked my dad what side of the family he is on. My dad answered, "Both." Okay, I know folks joke about the Midwest and how everyone is each other's cousin, but I didn't think it to be true (or at least true today). Dad explained that his dad's sister and his mother's brother got married and had Cousin Dick so he really is from both sides, no incest involved!

Earlier this month my cousin Angela came to visit from Missouri. She was in the area attending a conference on psychology and I hadn't seen her in 20 years.

Most of my parents' siblings live in Missouri so I didn't grow up being close to my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Since both of my parents came from large families (my dad is one of sixteen and my mom is one of twelve!) I'm guessing I might have close to 100 first cousins. Even though I don't remember all of them I definitely remember connecting with Angela. I remember her and I being the same age and playing together whenever we visited so I was excited to see her and catch up.

Since Angela's conference was in Seattle, my youngest sister, Christine, and I took Angela over on the ferry to show her around. We stopped at the Ole Curiosity Shop, the Seattle Waterfront Arcade (Mike's work), ate at the Crabpot, walked briefly through Pike Place market, and walked up to Angela's hotel that was a few blocks from the convention center.

Salmon Hatchery Field Trip

On Friday a few families from our homeschooler's group visited a local salmon hatchery. We arrived a little late and missed the workers catching the fish and fertilizing the eggs. But we did get a neat tour of the indoor facility to see the salmon eggs in the various stages. We hope to go back in the spring to watch the new salmon be released back into the wild.

The black dot in the embryo is the baby salmon's eye.

The salmon embryo will stay in this shallow tray for 35 days before it moves on to another are.

The white embryos are the ones that have died.

After the baby salmon have hatched from their eggs they are released into this controlled pond until they are large enough to return into the wild.

Annual Caramel Apple Making

My sister, Mary, has been hosting the annual caramel apple making every fall at her home in Sequim. We headed up there a couple of weekends ago to make some yummy treats and visit. Mary always does a great job hosting. We're excited for her and her family to welcome their newest little one in December!

All Hallows Eve

Mike took the kids to the All Saints party up at church while I stayed home with Colette on Halloween. It had been a long day for me and I felt like I needed some quiet time. It was nice to be able to watch a movie, eat ice cream, and take a bath in peace! My husband is such a sweetheart for letting me have some time to myself. He really does spoil me.

Celine was dressed as St. Rose of Lima, Gavin was Saint Patrick, and Luke and Gabriel were the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. I'm regretting that I didn't get any pictures of them as they went out the door. The kids had a great time playing games and trunk-or-treating in the parking lot.

After the party they went over to my parents' house where my sisters had a Mario Brothers theme for Halloween. They bought costumes for the kids and handed out treats to the visitors. They made some pretty cool decorations too.

There was a warm, golden hue everywhere. We were all silently taking in the beauty of the season when Gavin says, "Now this is what I call Autumn."

The Taste of Fall

We had pumpkin pancakes for breakfast the last two mornings. Yummmmmy! If I had it my way we'd have them every morning, along with any other fall flavored treat you can think of. Cinnamon, nutmeg, apples, pumpkins, walnuts, cranberries....I can go on. But instead I'll leave you with a great oatmeal cookie recipe I came up with. As my friend put it, "It tastes like fall." Bake up a batch and you'll thank me.

Cranberry Walnut Oatmeal Cookies

3/4 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cloves
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon molasses
1 3/4 cups flour
2 cups rolled oats
1 cup craisins (dried cranberries)
1/2 cup walnuts

1. In a large mixing bowl beat butter with an electric mixer until creamy. Add sugar, molasses, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and cloves. Beat until combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally. Beat in eggs and vanilla until combined. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in any remaining flour. Stir in rolled oats, craisins, and walnuts.

2. Drop dough by rounded teaspoons 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 8-10 minutes or until edges are golden. Cool on cookie sheet for 1 minute. Transfer to cooling rack.

Luke's Laughs: More Pig Talk

The other day one of my friends said Luke told her something funny. We were attending the homeschooler's group culture fair when she said, "Luke told me when he was born he was a pig. But now he is no longer a pig, but a boy."

We were laughing and curious at what he meant. We finally realized that Luke was talking about the Zodiac calendar. Celine had done her culture fair project on China and all the kids were looking up their zodiac signs and what year they were born in. They looked up Luke's and told him that he was born in the year of the PIG. I guess he misunderstood and thought that when he was born he was an actual pig!

Getting Crafty

So I got the courage to get out Celine's sewing machine and give it another try. We brought it to my mom's house and she showed me how to thread the bobbin properly (so darn easy, how could I mess that up?!). Celine finally finished her pillow case that she started last spring at a sewing class. I'm so embarrassed it took me that long to get things up and going for her, but now it's done and she can enjoy her finished project.

Celine also received a bunch of different scrap fabrics from a good friend of mine. Included was a lovely fall pattern that I adored so for my birthday Celine said we would make a table runner together using the fabric that I loved so much. My mom helped out a ton. She is the experienced one who pinned, tucked, and ironed it all. All I did was cut the fabric and sew parts of it together. I learned a lot and want to make a square table cloth with the leftover fabrics for the school table.

There's a Badge for That!

Celine has picked up the skill and art of sewing. She desperately wants to make things with the sewing machine she received for her birthday. I need to take the time to teach her (and myself!) how to use it so she can let her creative juices flow. We've pulled out the machine a few times but haven't gotten very far. We know how to thread the needle through the top but need practice threading the bobbin from the bottom.

In the meantime Celine has been getting her sewing fix by stitching on badges to her new American Heritage Girl vest and Gavin's Cub Scout badge vest. Gavin has so many badges that he's earned over the years and I never got around to sewing them on so I told Celine she would get 25 cents for every badge she stitched on. Now, Gavin is proudly wearing his vest to Cub Scout events, thanks to his big sis!

Besides the benefit of learning this basic life skill, Celine can earn a sewing badge in AHG if she completes a few requirements. You go girl!

The Mystery Bird

Celine and Gavin took their bikes and rode up to a neighborhood pond last week. They came back, super excited to see a large bird standing in the pond. We occasionally see ducks in the pond so this new bird was a surprise to them.

Celine said, "I think it was a goose."

Gavin said, "No, it looked like a pelican, with it's long beak and long legs."

I told them that sounded like a crane. They told me it had blue wings so I looked up "blue crane" and found an endangered blue crane of Africa. I knew there was no way it could be that!

A few days later we took a walk to the pond. When we arrived Celine and Gavin were pointing to the huge bird standing in the middle of the pond. I took a quick picture before it flew away. It was amazing to watch such a large bird fly. I was convinced it was a crane but after several searches online discovered that it was in fact a blue heron. By the time we returned home Celine and Gavin were digging up their bird notebooks for science, eagerly wanting to learn more about this and many other birds in our area.

Cub Scout Family Camp

Mike took the kids camping in August for Cub Scout Family Camp at Penrose Point. I wasn't quite ready to go camping, being less than a month postpartum, so Colette, Gabriel and I stayed home. We visited the campsite and had lunch with them the next day.

School is now in session in the Cichy household. After all the children, except Colette, came down with hand, foot, and mouth I did not think we would start school when we did. But one Sunday evening I got a burst of energy to organize all the things I had been putting off, and to my surprise we started school the very next morning. I think I may have subconsciously been putting off the things that needed to get done because I was terrified of starting up school again with three little ones to keep occupied.

To my surprise the first few days were great and went smoothly. Colette took long naps during the day and the two younger boys played peacefully and even sat down to do their own "schoolwork."

And then mama got sick.

That totally threw things off in the second week as I barely had a voice and was exhausted during the day. Not to mention I was feeling incredibly overwhelmed by all the activities the kids and I are involved in. There seemed to be no time!

So now we are in week three and this is "catch up" week, finishing all the schoolwork we didn't get to last week (which actually wasn't as much as I thought) as well as getting on top of laundry and cleaning. I had made a family schedule over the summer based on the method in A Mother's Rule of Life. I can't seem to stick to it even though I structured it to our own natural schedule of how we normally do things in our home. I think what I am lacking the most is personal prayer time and sleep. I know that if I just get back on track with those two things everything will run more smoothly around here.

With everything going on this has become my motto the last few weeks:

"I can do all things in Him who strengthens me" (Phil 4:13)

It's helped me put things in perspective. It's helped me to scale back. And most importantly it's helped me to hand over control to the One who is in control.

I captured a video (it won't load!) of Gavin giving Luke a lesson on the formation of the letter "B." This sweet gesture of brotherly love reminded me that the ABC's and 123's are not as important as building a loving relationship with God and with others. When that comes first the rest will fall into place.

Wanna Get Away?

I've been wanting to get away these past few weeks. I'm not sure if I'm trying to flee from all the work that needs to be done in organizing the house and getting ready for school or if I feel like our family needs a nice break together to regroup before we buckle down with the school schedule.

I can't help but think about our perfect vacation down to Disneyland three years ago. And I mean perfect. We could not have asked for better weather, timing, or behavior from the children. Mike and I still sigh over the wonderful memories.

Here's a little snippet from our fabulous vacation. It pretty much sums up the whole experience.

Reflections During Adoration

Now that I have a little companion with me during my holy hour I can't always sit and do spiritual reading, kneel while I'm praying, or jot down ideas or thoughts that God inspires me with. I have learned over the years that adoring Christ in His Eucharistic presence can be in many forms and there is a time and place for everything.

About half way through my holy hour a couple of weeks ago I left the nave of the church to change Colette. As I was entering back in I walked down the center isle. I thought about all the important occasions in my life where I walked down that very isle: my First Communion, my confirmation, my husband being received into the Church, our wedding, the times where I sponsored young women for confirmation, being a bridesmaid in my brother's wedding, bringing my children forward to be baptized.

All of these occasions, all of these sacraments celebrated, have me walking down that isle toward the very person I should be walking toward my whole life: Jesus! And He is always there in the tabernacle, really and truly present in the Eucharist, waiting for me.

At that moment, while I was holding my new baby girl, I was thinking about Who I was bringing her toward. What a gift to be walking my daughter up to the King of Kings! I pray that I may always walk toward our Lord in everything I do and teach my children to do the same, even when I carry them.

Gavin's Gabs

It has been a while since I posted one of Gavin's Gabs. I was starting to think that maybe the phase of Gavin's unintentional humorous remarks were coming to an end.

Today as I was unloading the kids out of the van I noticed Colette had spit up. I grabbed the burp cloth to wipe her mouth and said, "Oh, you poor little thing!"

Gavin crawled out of the van and said, "Mom, she's not poor and she's not a thing! She's rich and she's a baby."

I guess I'll be saying, "You rich little baby," next time.

Oh Saturday, How I Loathe Thee!

I do not look forward to Wednesdays and Saturdays. These are the two days of the week where Mike works his open to close shifts. It turns out to be a very. long. day. And I need to keep in mind that it's a long day for Mike too.

It's very easy for me to pass off the baby in the middle of the night because I've been taking care of the kids all day. There is nothing wrong with asking for help from my spouse. But when I make a habit of staying up late to get some down time after the kids go to bed when I could and should be sleeping, it's not good. I have the obligation to get to bed early on those nights, knowing full well my husband will be home late and won't get the opportunity to get as much sleep as me.

Sometimes we give a little and take a little. Sometimes I need to give a little and give some more.

Colette's Baptism

Colette wore the same gown as Celine did at her baptism. It was my sister Catherine's. I took some more pictures of her in her gown today. I couldn't believe how well she behaved. It must have been the holiness from the chrism oozing from her head! (Father Lappe really likes to slather it on!)

American Heritage Girls

I've been privileged with the opportunity to help bring a girls scouting program to our parish called American Heritage Girls. The planning began in January and now, after many meetings of organizing and filling out paperwork, we are now registering girls in our parish to participate this fall!

Here is a tri-fold I made to help with recruiting.

We chose Troop #0716 after the feast day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel/Our Lady Star of the Sea, which is July 16th.

There are many Catholic awards the girls can earn. One program is called Footsteps of American Saints. We will be working to earn a patch of St. Frances Cabrini this year as well as work on a Rosary Patch.

I am very excited to see this program get started both for my own daughter and for the other girls in our parish whose parents are looking for a wholesome, faith-based scouting program for girls. I will be taking an active role on the Troop Board as Troop Shepherd, making sure the girls in the troop are fitting in well and are being spiritually fed. I figured this would be a good way to volunteer without having to be present at all the bi-monthly meetings and I can do a lot of the work from home.

We've been plugged in all day. Movies, video games, computer, just about anything electronic. And although the guilt started to settle in by mid-afternoon I did nothing to remedy the routine of the day.

After a night full of puking from a 2 and 4 year old and a restless newborn I gave myself permission to let things go and just say "yes" to everything the kids were asking for (well, almost everything).

And after reading this post from a mother of five boys I felt a lot better.

Yard Work

Mike took some time yesterday to show Gavin how to mow the lawn. It took twice the amount of time it usually does for them to mow the lawn together. We have quite a bit of yard in different sections on our property. I'm sure that took a lot of patience on Mike's part. Gavin worked really hard and he has the scraped knees to prove it (apparently he slipped when going down a slope)! Mike paid Gavin $5. We have agreed that extra chores, when completed in addition to their regular chores, can earn the kids money.

They actually were not able to finish mowing the lawn completely because the motor started acting funny and wasn't able to be restarted. I guess that's a project for another day!

Mike went back to work yesterday. He has been working the last two nights and he will be off tomorrow, so it's been a nice, gradual adjustment for me being home alone with the kids. So far so good!

Poulsbo Marine Science Center

On the Friday before Colette was born my sisters and I took the kids to the Poulsbo Marine Science Center. It's a great little place to take the kids for free (they accept donations) to learn about Pacific Northwest marine life. It had been a few years since we had visited so we checked out the new female octopus. We also touched sea stars and watched a documentary on various sea life.

I had hoped to eat lunch on the Poulsbo waterfront but parking was completely full (I'm sure because of the gorgeous day) and we were only allowed to park at the Marine Science Center if we were visiting, otherwise we would have walked from there to the waterfront park. As it turned out, we ate lunch in front of the center and got to watch a bunch of kayaks launch off into the water. Celine would love to have her own kayak someday and was ooing and awing at all the colorful boats.

The octopus was very friendly, showing off her tentacles.

The last time we came to the center this tank had parts of a sea star that exploded! Apparently that's what happens at the end of it's life.

Colette's Birth Story

God is good.

Since Mike works in Seattle we had a plan in case I went into labor while he was at work. That plan had to be put into action as my water broke Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 when the kids and I were all napping. Celine and Gavin woke up when they heard me calling my parents. Gavin asked me if I was okay and Celine asked if there was anything she could get me as I packed last minute items in my suitcase. What sweet, considerate children! They were excited but nervous.

I stopped what I was doing and said to them, "You don't need to worry. I'm not in any pain. What you can do is help tidy up the house and help with the little ones while I am away." Mom giving orders was more like it and they seemed to calm down after that. Gavin, my little man of the house when daddy is away, carried my suitcase and walked me out to my dad waiting in the truck.

My dad took me to the hospital and my good friend Ellie arrived soon after to help me along until Mike arrived. Ellie was a wonderful support and comfort, rubbing my feet with fragrant oils and reassuring me that Mike would be there in time for the birth of our daughter. I was so worried that he wouldn't make it, with the hour long ferry ride and evening traffic, so I stayed off my feet and laid in bed until he arrived at 5:45pm. By that time I had mild contractions and was just starting to have to breath through them.

Ellie suggested I sit on the yoga ball to widen my pelvis and get things progressing- and it sure did! Not long after that the strong contractions came one right after the other and I found myself lying in the bed again, pleading for something for relief. The nurse did the first check and said I was at 7cm. The doctor said I was too far along to have any meds in my IV so I asked about a epidural (something I wasn't planning on doing and truly didn't want, but in the midst of the pain was just looking for a way out!). They called the anesthesiologist and he set everything up. He wanted me to sit up to get the epidural in place.

Mike asked, "Are you sure you want to do this?" and I nodded so they did another check and said I was at 9 1/2cm! Mike asked again, "Do you still want to have the epidural?" I said firmly, "No! Can I push?!" I felt a slight urge but didn't know if they would let me. The doctor just arrived and heard me. He helped me get past the last 1/2cm and 5-6 pushes later Colette was born!

9 pounds 6 oz! Our biggest baby, beating her big brothers by 1 ounce!

We immediately thought she looked like her 4 year old brother, Luke.

So glad she is here!

My sister Cathy arrived in the middle of all the action with my suitcase (because I left it in dad's truck) and was able to be there for Colette's birth.

The staff was expecting more deliveries so we were moved the next morning to another wing of the hospital. Colette and I got to spend some one on one time together while Mike visited the kids at my parents' house. Here is a little video of Colette in action at the hospital. She looks so much like Mike!

We had a nice crowd of visitors to keep us company at the hospital during our extended stay. Because I tested positive for Group B Strep and didn't receive enough antibiotic during the labor they had to keep us an extra day to keep an eye on Colette to make sure she didn't contract the bacteria. It's just a precaution and of course she is fine.

I always like it when family and friends visit. It makes the time go by faster!

Colette Louise Cichy was born on Tuesday at 7:30pm. She weighed 9lbs 6oz and was 20 in long.

We arrived home yesterday afternoon and are adjusting to this sweet little bundle of joy! More pictures and details to come! Thank you for all of your well wishes and prayers!

Baby Update II

After discussing things over with Mike we both decided that inducing labor on Monday was too soon, considering how well the baby and I are doing. I spoke to my OB last night and she agreed to postpone the induction for after my due date, if I get that far. She also said she would feel more comfortable having me come in twice next week for the non-stress test to keep an eye on baby in case anything looks out of the ordinary.

Star Fest!

Last Saturday our parish had it's annual Star Fest celebration. It's a fun-filled day of food, games, and entertainment at our church. As a kid I remember looking forward to this event every summer. It was recently revived three years ago and takes place on the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (also Our Lady Star of the Sea), our parish's patroness.

We were there bright and early for the kickoff event, the 5K Run, and cheered on my brother and the other runners.

Gavin participated in the kiddie dash at the last minute. He wasn't quite ready, wearing boots and his coat tied around his waist, but he still came in 2nd place!

Gavin was also in a Hapkido demonstration. He has been taking the Korean martial arts class at our church for the last several months and really enjoys it. It has been a great way for him to spend time with his Nino (godfather), Frank, who is the instructor.

Baby Update

I've been having lots of contractions, several back to back but nothing progressing. I saw my OB today and she says I am dilated at 3-4cm! If I don't go into labor within the next week I will be induced on Monday, July 25th.

Thanks to a generous friend's gift certificate I received at the baby shower I scheduled an appointment for a 1 hour massage on Thursday. I told the masseuse on the phone that I am not opposed to any techniques that can put me into labor!

Please keep baby and I in your prayers that all goes well and that we're able to avoid the medical inducement on Monday.

Fun at the Beach

We had a fun afternoon at Point No Point Sunday afternoon with my two sisters, brother, and the Peck family. It wasn't really swimming weather but it was partly sunny and warm enough for me! The kids had a great time and still played in the water and sand. Mike was even in a daring mood and tackled Gavin in the water, getting completely soaked and causing Gavin to swallow a mouthful of saltwater! I'm glad he brought a change of clothes! We spotted seals and cruise ships on their way up to Alaska. After getting the kids cleaned up as much as we could we had pizza in Kingston at the Pizza Factory.

We arrived home with sand in every place you can think of. I'm surprised I had the energy to clean and put everything away. I must be nesting!

The Birds and The Bees

Well, this post really is about birds and bees.

As stated in the previous post, Celine was heading inside from playing in the yard when she heard squawking (and I really mean squawking, not sweet little chirps) in a bush between the porch stairs and the house. She peeked inside and saw a little beak reach out to her. After telling me about the baby bird I went out to take a few pictures and realized there were actually three baby birds huddled together in a nest, waiting for their mother's return. Every time we held back the branches or there was any sudden movements the baby birds would stretch out their necks and open their beaks wide, waiting for someone to feed them. We went back into the house to have lunch and the mother soon returned. Gavin pulled out his bird guide and we were able to identify the birds as house wrens.

We have a bird house that Celine painted a few years ago. As Mike was cutting the grass the other day he noticed some bees going in and out of the bird house. That could only mean one thing. Sure enough he discovered a yellow jackets' nest inside. He'll probably end up hosing it down like the hornets nest he found last year.

Baby Shower

Yesterday my dear friend, Ellie, and godmother of our soon-to-be baby girl threw me a wonderful baby shower. It all started with darling invitations that she handmade with two birds on the front. It soon turned into a bird theme complete with the sweetest little touches to make it a memorable occasion.

I'm so thankful and grateful for all the generous gifts given for our baby girl. With just three weeks until the due date I'm getting pretty anxious to meet this new little one!

Corpus Christi

The feast of Corpus Christi was just a few weeks ago. In our parish it has become a beautiful celebration and something we look forward to every year. This year our pastor added a pageant to kick off the procession, explaining the story behind the feast day. Gavin played the part of Pope Urban IV in the pageant and did an excellent job. This was his first time ever in a play and we're so proud of him for getting through all the practices and memorizing all of his long and complicated lines. He had a lot of fun and who knows, maybe there will be more productions for our little actor in the future!

Cub Scout Cross Over

Gavin crossed over from a Bear to a Webelo in Cub Scouts last month. For the next two years he will be a Webelo, preparing to become a Boy Scout. The cross over and awards ceremony were at Evergreen Park. All next week Gavin will be participating in Cub Scout Day Camp. He's looking forward to all the activities and new boys he'll meet.

Strawberry Picking in Sequim

Our Homeschooler's Group got together on Friday to go strawberry picking in Sequim. My nephew who is visiting from Idaho and a few of my siblings came along too. I love the drive up north, seeing all the little farms and wild flowers on the side of the road.

We went to Grays Marsh, where we went blueberry and raspberry picking last year. The crop was late this year for strawberries due to the cold spring but there were still plenty of berries to pick. My family picked a total of 8 pounds of strawberries. I would have liked to have picked more but my pregnant self was done and my two youngest looked like they were tired (probably from all the strawberries they had eaten!). I ended up freezing the berries we had left by the time we got home. Hopefully I will be able to make some strawberry rhubarb jam soon!

After berry picking we went to a park with another local homeschooling family to have lunch and let the kids run around and play.

Baby Boom

There is a baby boom going on in our parish and in my family. I know over a dozen ladies who are pregnant. Right now I have a sister and sister-in-law that are also expecting. Every morning when we pray our Morning Offering we pray for all the mothers and their babies and I never remember all of their names! So here is a prayer list for all the moms that have been in my thoughts and prayers. May God protect them and their little ones!

Prayers Please

Tomorrow I will be 35 weeks pregnant. These last five weeks are going to be full of doctor's appointments to keep an eye on me an baby. With the threat of preeclampsia looming the baby will be monitored every week to see how she is handling the environment in my belly. Also, I can't seem to get rid of this yucky cold. It seems to have morphed into a head cold and is causing even more interrupted sleep and sluggishness. Please keep baby girl and I in your prayers!

Star Wars Exhibit

Yes, the Cichys are Star Wars geeks. Mike has shared his love of the Sci-Fi films with the kids and they know a lot more about the characters and story line than I do. And no, we did not name our third child after Luke Skywalker, but after Saint Luke the gospel writer!

Way back in March we took the kids to the Seattle Science Center to see the Star Wars Exhibit, thanks to a generous Christmas gift from my sister, Catherine. The props we very cool to see and they had some neat interactive areas.

Mariner's Game with the Scouts

Mike took Gavin, Celine, and Luke to a Mariner's game with the Cub Scouts several weeks ago. It was Scout Day at Safeco Field, an annual event that brings many packs. The weather was great and the kids had a fun day out with daddy.

After a four day battle with a nasty cold I'm finally starting to feel like myself (my large, sluggish, pregnant self, that is).

Today I've been catching up on my housecleaning, exercising (actually went for a walk today!), organizing for baby and school, and blogging.

It's pretty warm today too so the kids have been enjoying the nice weather in the sprinkler. I know you all love the summer heat, but I really hope it doesn't get any warmer than this! I don't think my support-hose-clad body can handle it!

Artist or Vandal?

Gabriel has discovered drawing. He was introduced to crayons this year at the school table while the other kids colored or did school work. Now, whenever he gets his hands on any writing medium- pencils, crayons, markers, or chalk- he goes to town on whatever is in front of him. He has drawn on the table, chairs, walls, window sills, and refrigerator.

I've never had a child so interested in drawing as this kiddo. Sure they'd all go through a short phase of drawing on the walls, but they'd only do it a few times before they realized that it made mommy really, really mad and they wouldn't do it again. And they never did it at age 2. I guess I'm pretty lucky I've made it this far without having it be a problem before.

I've been debating on whether or not to invest in those Crayola products that only color on special paper. It would save me a lot of time cleaning up these little pieces of artwork all over the house. But then I think about how this is all a valuable lesson for him on what is appropriate to draw on and what isn't, a lesson for me to keep those things out of his reach, and how this is a lesson for the other kids to PUT THEIR PENCILS, CRAYONS, AND MARKERS AWAY WHEN THEIR FINISHED!

Seagull Calling Contest

Gavin entered a Seagull Calling Contest last Sunday in Port Orchard during the Kitsap Harbor Festival. Whenever we are at the park, on the ferry, or just near the water Gavin is always making seagull noises. So when I saw the contest advertised in the paper I couldn't resist encouraging him to enter.

He was a little nervous but had a fun time. And if it weren't for that woman with her fantastic seagull call I think Gavin would have won it, haha! Some contestants made calls, some threw bread or crackers, and some wore seagull costumes. There was even a dog that entered!

I would love to share the video of Gavin's call during the competition but I'm having problems loading it (I've been having problems for months loading videos onto Blogger, so frustrating!) So the following video will have to do.

My parents celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on May 29th. We had a barbecue at their house with all but two of my siblings (we miss you Jen and Therese!).

Mom and Dad have shown us what a loving, committed marriage looks like: one that reflects the triune love of God. We, their children, have been so blessed to have them as our parents.

We had a great year homeschooling and I am pleased with all that Celine and Gavin have learned this year. We've had fun learning about the 10 Commandments, the Beatitudes, the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy, the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, the major rivers and mountains in the US, info on the seven continents including area, population, and highest points, personification, exclamatory, interrogative, and imperative sentences. Science was filled with learning about tectonic plates and volcanoes, rocks and minerals, and the water cycle. We did a bit of Latin earlier in the year and continued learning about some great composers including Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Bach. Gavin learned his times tables and moved on to long division while Celine simplified mixed fractions and multiplied decimals. This is just to name a few things!

We finished all of our major subjects (catechism, math, science, geography, history, and language) in mid-May. I am having Celine and Gavin continue with their spelling books until their finished. I kind of goofed and purchased spelling books for them last fall and they finished them by the winter. We were supposed to take two weeks per lesson but I had them do it in one week- oops! So I bought them new spelling books just to keep them going. I figured having them continue with their spelling during the summer wouldn't be so bad and it will give them something to do everyday.

In addition to the spelling Celine is continuing with Little Flowers on her own and is earning patches for Wreath III. She participated in the program last year in our parish school and so I thought it would be nice for her to continue, if she wanted. She really enjoys learning about the different virtues and saints and memorizing new Bible verses. Jessica at Shower of Roses has organized a beautiful program for her girls so I am using resources from her sight.

Gavin will be working on his Parvuli Dei award for Cub Scouts too. His workbook is fairly simple so I am trying to get creative with the activities so that he will have plenty to do and learn alongside Celine. My hope is that he will have a nice scrapbook of activities he can look back from earning this religious award.

I am currently getting ready for next year by ordering all the books I need and getting my lesson plans in order before the new baby arrives. I've decided to throw Luke in the mix and get him started on the Alphabet Path next year. The idea is to do one letter a week and all the activities will surround that letter. For example, during "A" week we'll talk and read about apples, alligators, angels, etc. We might go pick some apples up the street and talk about how they grow, count the seeds inside of an apple, and make an apple pie. We'll talk about the angels and how God made them to be His messengers and guardians for us. This will be very laid back and fun, just to get him introduced to all the letters and numbers.

I don't think I've posted any pictures from our schooling this year so here is a glimpse at some of our activities.

Mary Poppins

One of Celine's birthday presents back in March were tickets to see Mary Poppins in Seattle. May 24th finally came and Celine and I had a wonderful Mother/Daughter night out. We went with some other families from our parish and got a great discount.

The show was fantastic! I was impressed with the beautiful Paramount Theater itself, along with the incredible sets and lighting in the show. My favorite number was "Step in Time" with all of the chimney sweeps tap dancing and Bert walking and dancing on the walls and ceiling! The end was enchanting with Mary Poppins flying over the crowd at the end.

Celine's Hair Cut

Celine has been growing out her hair for the last two years so she can donate it to Locks of Love. There were many times where she begged me to get her hair cut because it was getting difficult to wash and brush. I said she could cut her hair at any time but I reminded her this is something she wanted to do and I wanted her to give it some serious thought before she made her final decision. She pulled through and let her hair grow long enough to cut 10-12 inches.

Armed Forces Day Parade 2011

As is Cichy tradition we took the kids to the annual Armed Forces Day Parade a few weeks ago. The weather wasn't great but it also wasn't so bad that it kept us away. Just a light, steady sprinkle and it wasn't too cold. The kids had a blast as usual.

Wooden Saint Dolls

I had seen these wooden saint dolls on other Catholic mom's blogs and had always wanted to make some. Thanks to a generous friend, some creative sisters, and an artistic mother we now (since last fall) have a collection of saints to play with and display in our home.

They currently live in an egg carton on my bookshelf. Sometimes I will bring a saint out around their feast day and set it out on the bookshelf as a sweet reminder along with a book about them or a novena. Lately I have been bringing the whole collection down and letting the two younger ones play with them while we pray the rosary.

Poor St. Rose of Lima has been outside the carton for months now, away from her saintly wooden friends. She was separated from the group and left at my parents' house. When I finally retrieved her she had made a place in my diaper bag and there she has stayed, only coming out during mass as a distraction for the boys.

I hope these darling little saint dolls will spark imagination and interest in my children to learn more about their lives and how they too can become saints.

Portland Workshop

Celine has been singing in our parish girls choir, The Starlights, for the past two years. This past weekend the choir had an opportunity to travel down to Portland for a choral workshop at St. Stephen's parish. They also sang for a Latin Mass combined with children from another local choir, Cantores in Ecclesia.

We were fortunate enough to stay with the Clark family, my friend Ellie's parents. What a blessing to have friends that will take you in! Ellie and I brought our youngest children with us, Celine, and my sister, Christine, who also participates in the choir.

We left around 9am and arrived in Vancouver about Noon. After settling in at the Clark residence we drove 20 min to Portland to drop off the girls for their workshop. They had a busy afternoon with the workshop, a lunch break, and then a practice before the vigil mass that evening.

The music for the mass was beautiful with the combined choirs and the acoustics in the church were outstanding. I hope to get a recording of the music and share it with you all. The church itself was beautiful with detailed stained glass windows and over-sized Stations of the Cross. Behind the main alter was a lovely Pieta, enshrined with pillars and a starry, domed ceiling.

The girls were exhausted after the long day so we didn't stay long afterward at the cheese and wine reception. I ended up getting lost that evening in Portland. Thankfully we made it back to the Clark residence alright.

The Starlights are hoping to have more opportunities for travel and are fundraising for an ultimate goal of going to Rome sometime in the next couple of years.

I am so glad Celine is involved in this beautiful ministry, leading others in song to worship, praise, and give thanks to God.
